Roanoke’s Municipal South LiveRoof Becomes New Focal Point for Environmental Stewardship

During the last weekend in April, the city turned its podium roof “green” by installing 2,900 square feet of live plants. The green roof, which surrounds the south entrance to the building, is installed on top of an existing roof membrane to reduce heating and cooling loads by increasing insulation, absorb noise, and help sustain a habitat for butterflies, insects, and songbirds. Staff anticipates this living roof will increase the life of the existing roof membrane from 20 years to 60 years.  The project also included a 3000 gallon Rainwater Harvest System for irrigation of the LiveRoof.
